Obsidian is technically not a crystal, but a volcanic glass. It is formed when volcanic lava cools quickly. Other names are xaga or royal agate. With a hardness of 5-5.5, it contains no crystalline structure at all. Some Obsidian has a gold sheen, which is caused by gas bubbles in the lava.
