Obsidian is technically not a crystal, but a volcanic glass, or an amorphous solid. It is formed with volcanic lava cools quickly. Other names are xaga or royal agate. With a hardness of 5-5.5, it contains no crystalline structure at all. Some obsidian has a gold sheen which is caused by gas bubbles in the lava.
